My Eyes Tokyo

I sang songs for the newlyweds. Kentaro Minagawa, an alpine skier, and Aiko Uemura, a freestyle mogul skier held their wedding ceremony on Sept. 26. I sang two songs, such as “You Raise Me Up” “Time To Say Goodbye” there.
Both of them are very famous athletes among Japanese, so many celebrities gathered to congratulate the love birds. Moreover there were many TV cameras to cover their bridal… I was kind of nervous.
However I was really happy to be there because they really liked my singing voice. Kentaro san, Aiko san, Long life and happiness to you!

プロスキーヤーの皆川賢太郎さんと、モーグル選手の上村愛子さんの結婚式で、私、歌いました！お２人のリクエストで『You Raise Me Up』と『Time To Say Goodbye』の２曲をお贈りしました。
元々は、私がいつもお世話になっている東邦大学病院の杉山先生が、お２人を「ミンスクの台所」にお連れしたのがきっかけ。結婚式で歌ってくれる人を探していたお２人が、私の歌を気に入ってくれたんです。
当日は６００名の人たちがお２人を祝福。テレビ局もたくさん取材に来ていました。しかも、松任谷正隆さん＆由実さんご夫妻までいらして・・・とっても緊張しましたが、私はお２人と同じように幸せな気持でいっぱいでした。
皆川さん、上村さん、末永くお幸せに！

We had a belly dancer as a guest tonight! Elina Kalita, an Ukrainian dancer, is a Chuo-ku resident and she’s been friends with Ekaterina for over 10 years.
Elina has a belly dancing career that spans about 20 years. Before that, she was a dancer who belonged to the Ukrainian national folk dance company. But once she looked at a beautiful performance of a belly dancer in Dubai, she was absolutely charmed by its “intelligent sexiness”. That was her turning point.

先週までのシリアスムードから一転、今週はパッと華やかな雰囲気に満ちた放送になったと思います。ウクライナ出身のベリーダンサー、エリィーナ・カリタさんをゲストにお迎えしました。エカテリーナさんとはお友達で、１０年以上のお付き合い。お住まいもエカテリーナさんと同じく中央区です。
ベリーダンサー歴は約２０年。まだ日本にいらっしゃる前、クラシックバレエやウクライナ民族舞踊の踊り手だったエリィーナさんが、巡業先のドバイで偶然にベリーダンスを見、その美しさや、ベリーダンスの持つ「インテリジェント・セクシー」に惹かれて自らも始めたそうです。

Since she came to Japan, Elina has widen her appeal such as movies and music videos. And she opened her own dance school called “Make your body with ELINA” in Naka-meguro last August.
Every time she teaches her students how to dance, she says, “You don’t need to perform like me. You don’t have to try to dance well. Dance in ways you like”.  Because each person has his/her own individuality and Elina wants to draw it out, she said.

来日後は活躍の場を映画やプロモーション・ビデオにまで広げました。また昨年８月、中目黒にダンススクール「Make your body with ELINA」をオープンしました。
エリィーナさんは生徒さんに必ず言います。「私のように踊らなくていい。上手く踊ろうとしなくていい。自分らしく踊りなさい」。なぜなら人はそれぞれ個性があるから、先生としてそれを引き出したい、とのことです。

If you want to see her performances up close in Chuo-ku, it’s possible in Ginza! She performs on the stage of “Istanbul”, a Turkish restaurant chain in Tokyo between Wednesday and Saturday. It has restaurants in Akasaka and Shinjuku, too, and you should reserve tables on dates of the events because many people come to the restaurants on those days. So if you want to see her, please make a phone call to the restaurant first.

A fashion show which I held in June 2010 won great popularity so I will run it again on November 9 (Tue).
And… I’ll do my show at Hotel New Otani, one of the most luxury hotels in Japan!!!! I think every single Japanese knows about this hotel.
We’ll have three fashion models. All of them are from former Soviet Union, no Japanese model. But they are really, really cute so don’t miss it!

今年６月に銀座でさせていただいた、私のお手製の”着物ドレス”のファッションショー。それが大好評だったので、第２弾を１１月９日（火）にさせていただくことになりました！しかも、場所がすごいんです。

A talk with Hector Sierra, a representative of NGO “Artist Without Borders” continues. He told us about what he saw in post-911 Afghanistan.

引き続き「国境なきアーティストたち」代表、コロンビア出身のエクトル・シエラさんをお迎えしてお送りしたMy Eyes Tokyo。今週は、エクトルさんが見た９１１後のアフガニスタンです。

After Hector finished a workshop with New York kids, he came back to Japan and left for Afghanistan in May 2002. Hector suggested for Afghan kids to draw pictures of their town as well as in New York.
Taliban regime collapsed about two months after 911 attacks and Afghan people celebrated a restoration of a long-absent peace. Many kids drew the scenes of bloodshed by Taliban instead of views of their town.

エクトルさんは２００１年１２月〜２００２年２月までニューヨークで子どもたちと絵のワークショップを行い、日本に帰国後、２００２年５月にアフガニスタンに向かいました。そこでもニューヨークと同様に「私たちのまち」というテーマで子どもたちに絵を描いてもらいました。
９１１テロから約２ヶ月後にタリバン政権は崩壊し、人々は平和が戻って来たことを大変喜んだとのことですが、絵の内容は、こちらも自分たちの街というよりは、タリバン政権下で人々が殺されていく場面を描いたものがたくさんあったそうです。

But Hector found a ray of hope there. He got some drawings for design of WTC in New York. He brought them to Afghanistan and showed kids them. He asked children, “What do you want to build on the WTC site?”. One of them said, “I would like to build a university for orphans all around the world.” All of them were orphans but I was surprised that a toddler-aged kid provided such a valuable opinion.
Moreover New York is very far from Afghanistan. It must be too far for them to give more than a passing thought to. But a kid said that he wanted to open such a significant facility on Ground Zero. I believe that the world would be improved by such wonderful children.

でも、アフガニスタンにも希望の光はありました。エクトルさんはニューヨークで、世界貿易センタービルの設計図を手に入れました。それをアフガニスタンの子どもたちの前で広げてみせ、「君たちなら、この跡地に何を作りたい？」と聞きました。すると彼らの中から「世界中の孤児を集めた大学を作りたい」という意見が出てきました。その彼らも孤児ですが、まだ年端もいかない子どもに、そのような大変立派な意見が出てくるのが驚きでした。
しかも、遠く離れたニューヨークという、日常生活では彼らに何の関係もない場所に、そのような学校を作るというアイデアが出てきたことに、私は彼らの素晴らしい想像力を感じずにはいられませんでした。彼らのような子どもたちがいる限り、世界は良い方向に向かっていくと信じたいです。

I saw kids’ pictures that appears on Hector Sierra’s book called “Ano Hi No Koto Wo Kakimashita (We Drew About The Day). Those communicate very strong massages.
I believe that children are angels because they are totally pure. But that’s why they draw something exactly like it is. Their drawings looked innocent so I felt like, “Kids draw such cruel situations…”
I decided to sing “Hanamizuki” with my wish for peace last week. Then I thought I would sing to contribute to the making of a peaceful world because I don’t want kids to draw such gut-wrenching pictures. I’ll make a start on September 25 (Sat), at Nogawa Elementary School in Kawasaki. I’ll join the event called “Nijiiro No Ongakukai (Rainbow-colored Concert) there. I’ll sing for children with sincere feeling.

今週も先週に引き続き、コロンビア出身のエクトル・シエラさんにスタジオに遊びに来ていただきました。エクトルさんの本『あの日のことを かきました』に載っている子どもたちの絵、私も見ました。すごく強いメッセージを私に投げかけてきました。
私は「子どもたちは天使」だと信じています。彼らは天使のようにピュア。でも、だからこそ見たまま、感じたままを絵にしていく。絵にあどけなさが残るから余計に「子どもたちにこんな絵を描かせてしまった・・・」と思ってしまいます。
先週私は『ハナミズキ』を平和の気持ちを込めて歌っていこうと決めました。そして今週は、子どもたちにあのような絵を描かせないような世の中に一歩でも近づくために歌っていこうと思いました。その第一歩として、私は９月２５日（土）に子どもたちの前で歌います。川崎市宮前区にある、市立野川小学校の体育館で「虹色の音楽会」というものが開かれ、私がゲスト出演します。毎年、いろんなジャンルの音楽家たちがこの音楽会に出演するのだそうですが、そこで私は、気持ちを込めて子どもたちに歌を贈ろうと思います。
