Enjoy ethnic festivals in Tokyo! （エスニック祭りを楽しもう！）

John Matthews – a journalist who usually transmits the news coverage regarding Japan via NPR (National Public Radio), the America’s non-profit media organization. That means his voice is heard all over the U.S!
Also he has his own podcast project called “The Japan Show”. You can listen to it at http://japanshowpodcast.co.cc/. I was really happy to talk in front of  a microphone with a professional guy like him!

アメリカの公共ラジオ放送「NPR (National Public Radio)」で日本関係のニュースを伝えるジャーナリスト、ジョン・マシューズさんです。とっても甘く優しい声を、全米に響かせています。他にも独自のポッドキャスト番組「The Japan Show」で、もう少し突っ込んだ日本関連の話題について、Co-hostと一緒に議論を交わしています。The Japan Showの英語はネイティブ向けなのでかなり速いですが、この番組でリスニングの勉強をしていただいた方は、一度このPodcastにも挑戦してみてはいかがでしょうか？

By the way, have you been to any ethnic (or cultural) festival before? There will be many kinds of festivals in Tokyo such as;
● Indian Festival & African Festival… August 13 (Sat) – 14 (Sun) head simultaneously at Yoyogi Park.
● Thai Loikaton Festival, a huge Thai cultural event… August 27 (Sat) – 28 (Sun) at Hibiya Park.

ところで、皆さんはエスニックイベントに行かれたことはありますか？東京では、この夏も各国の文化を紹介するイベントが盛りだくさん。例えば；
● インドフェスティバル＆アフリカフェスティバル・・・８月１３日（土）〜１４日（日）代々木公園にて同時開催。
● タイ・ロイカトン祭（大きなタイ文化紹介のイベント）・・・８月２７日（土）〜２８日（日）日比谷公園にて開催。

As I mentioned on the tonight’s show, I got a chance to join a big festival in a small town in Gunma Prefecture in July 2011.
そして今夜の放送では、先月に群馬県の小さい町で行われた大きなお祭りについてお送りしました。

Look at this video. It’s about a huge festival in Oizumi-machi, which is located approximately 80km north of Tokyo. Foreigners constitute nearly 20% of the total population and mostly Japanese-Brazilians who work at factories of home appliance or automobile.
I went there with my friend and really enjoyed its unique atmosphere very much!!
上のビデオをご覧下さい。これは先月２４日に群馬県大泉町というところで行われた大きなお祭りの様子ですが、なぜかブラジルテイストたっぷりではありませんか？この町の人口の２０％近くを外国人が占め、中でも日系ブラジル人が多いのが特徴。なのでこのような独特な空気が流れているわけですが、友人と電車を乗り継いでこのお祭参加した私は、心の底から楽しみました。日本なのに、日本じゃない。外国人を東京以上に普通に見かける。そんな雰囲気がとっても新鮮でした。

However, I realized something weird. I want to say that the mood of the town was mixture of Japanese and Brazilian. But in my impression, it was not like that. How did I feel about that? Hit the play button on the top of this page!

It’s a website of Oizumi-machi. It has no foreign language pages or links even though 16% of the total population is comprised by foreign residents. It would make you wonder. Why no foreign language pages at all? A town officer gave us his personal opinion about it. Please listen to our tonight show. ?
大泉町のサイトです。町の人口の１６％が外国人（ちなみに中央区は２％程度）であるにも関わらず、外国語のページやそれにつながるリンクが一切ありません。それはなぜなのでしょうか・・・町の行政担当の方が、あくまで個人的な見解としてご意見を述べてくださいました。それについても、今夜の番組をお聴きいただけたらと思います。
