Do you remember the project called “Tohoku Shine On! Cycle Challenge“? 3 foreigners cycled from Tokyo to Sendai (about 380km) and raised more than 1 million yen for kids in the quake-stricken areas in Tohoku.
They donated contributions to a foundation called “Tyler Foundation”. Today we welcomed Kimberly Forsythe, president of the foundation, and heard how they spent the donation from them.

It’s been supporting children in Tohoku since 3.11 Earthquake occurred. Surprisingly, the 3 foreigners from Tohoku Shine On – Steve, Ray & Paul – brought money to the foundation and then Tyler Foundation moved to support children in the Tohoku Region (Actually we thought the opposite. We thought that they donated money to the foundation because they wanted to support its activities in Tohoku).

皆さんは、５月にスタジオにお越しいただいた３人の外国人自転車野郎たちを覚えていますか？ここからご覧いただけますが、東京から仙台までの約３８０キロの道のりを自転車で走破することに挑戦しながら寄付を募る「東北シャインオン！サイクルチャレンジ」という試みをし、何と１００万円以上を集めました。その彼らが募金を持っていった先が、今週と来週の２週にわたりご紹介する「タイラー基金」です。

この基金は、３月１１日の東日本大震災以降、東北地方の子供たちの心のケアに取り組んでいます。しかし意外なことに、タイラー基金が東北地方の子供たちのサポートに動いたのは、３人の外国人 – スティーブさん、レイさん、ポールさん – が基金に寄付金を持っていったのがきっかけでした（私たちはその逆、つまりタイラー基金の活動を支援するために寄付をしたと考えていました）。

Today we talked about “Light Up Nippon”, the project to light up the Tohoku coast. Then we’re happy to inform all of you that the Light Up Nippon Committee has set up a donation account with PayPal and credit card from outside Japan! We welcomed Mohamed Omar Abdin, a visually impaired person from Sudan again this week. He is the head director of CAPEDS (Committee for Assisting and Promoting Education of the Disabled in Sudan), a Japan-based non-profit organization which supports the education for the disabled in Sudan.
Now he has a Sudanese wife and a newborn baby girl. She was born on March 25, 2011… which means she came into the world right after the huge earthquake. We were still amid the chaos so it was really difficult to deliver in Eastern Japan.

By the way Sudan, his homeland, will be divided into two parts and “Republic of Southern Sudan” will be born on 9 July 2011. His organization will hold the seminar the day before the division to look at the effect of  the emergence of new country on the Sudan region. Abudin will talk on this topic there.

今週も「スーダン障害者教育支援の会」(CAPEDS）の代表理事で、視覚障害を持つモハメド・オマル・アブディンさんをゲストにお迎えしてお送りしました。現在は奥様と、生まれたばかりの女の子の赤ちゃんと一緒に府中の東京外大学生寮にお住まいとのことですが、余震が続く中で生まれた女の子をめぐる出産秘話をお聞きしました。

まずここで整理したいと思います。お父さんであるアブディンさんは、視覚障害者です。そして奥様ですが、来日してわずか４ヶ月半、ほとんど言葉が分かりません。状況としては、生まれてくる赤ちゃんは逆子なので手術が必要でした。時は３月半ば、まだ大きな余震が続いていました。さて、アブディン一家は一体どんな行動を取ったのでしょうか？このページの一番上にあるオレンジ色の再生ボタンをクリックして、その一部始終をお聴きください。今週も、日本語でお話しいただいております。

ところでスーダンと言えば、先週もアブディンさんが少し言いかけた（そして僕があっさり流してしまった笑）のですが、来週土曜日、つまりちょうど１週間後に南北に分かれます。新しい国「南スーダン共和国」の誕生です。
そこでアブディンさん率いる「スーダン障害者教育支援の会」（CAPEDS）は、文字通りその前夜、７月８日（金）夜７時から、虎ノ門の日本財団ビルにて勉強会を行います。「スーダンはこれで平和になるのか？〜新国家・旧国家の挑戦〜」というテーマで、アブディンさんが講演をします。スーダンの未来に興味のある方、生のアブディンさんをご覧になりたい方、奮ってご参加ください！。
