When the 911 attacks occurred in New York, I was really busy so I had no time to watch TV or listen to the radio.
Before that event, I met a crew of Air France. He was on the flight for New York but he couldn’t come back to Japan because of 911.
I got a phone call from him. He said, “I cannot go back to Japan”. But I had no idea what happened over there. He was amazed at a woman who didn’t know about such a headline-making case.
Now I often sing a song called “Hanamizuki”. Tokuhashi-san, my co-host, told me that the song is closely linked to the 911 attacks. Yo Hitoto, a songwriter of Hanamizuki, got an e-mail from her friend who was living in NYC at that time. Then she wrote the song in a week. When the song was completed, there were some bitter words such as “terror” “shotgun” etc. But she eliminated those words and then she thought of the phrase like “I hope you would be with your dearest love for 100 years”.
I will sing this song in the hope of peace from now on.

今日は９月１１日ということで、私たちの番組では９１１特集をお送りしました。私は２００１年の同時多発テロ当時はすでに日本にいましたが、忙しくてテレビやラジオを見たり聞いたりする時間がありませんでした。
ちょうどその頃、エールフランスの乗務員と知り合いました。その方はニューヨーク便のフライトに乗務員として勤務し、さあ日本に帰ろう、となった時にテロが起きて、帰れなくなってしまったそうです。
その人から電話がありました。「テロのおかげで日本に帰れなくなった」と。私は情報に全く接していなかったので、恥ずかしながらテロが起きたことを知りませんでした。その人からは「知らないの？もう世界中でニュースになっているのに！」と呆れられてしまいましたが・・・
そんな私が、一青窈さんの『ハナミズキ』を歌っているのも、何だか不思議な縁です。共同パーソナリティの徳橋さんが教えてくれたんですけど、この歌は実は９１１にとっても関係があるみたいなんです。９１１の直後、当時ニューヨークにいた一青さんのお友達からのメールをきっかけに、１週間で書いた曲なんだそうです。作詞をした当時は”テロ”や”散弾銃”といった言葉があったけど、それらの言葉を削って、やがて”君と好きな人が百年続きますように”の言葉にたどり着いたのだそうです。
今日のエクトルさんのお話を思い出しながら、これからも平和への願いをこめて、この歌を歌いたいと思います。

We had the second meeting of the “Ekaterina’s Supporters’ Club Kayabacho Branch” with Tatsuhiko Kawasaki, producer of NHK’s music program called “Minna No Uta (Everyone’s songs)”.
Kawasaki san is the spearhead for Ekaterina’s song called “Furui Oshiro No Monogatari (Story of the Old Castle)”. He produced it with Hisao Nishiwaki, her producer, about 6 years ago and it became a starmaking vehicle for Ekaterina.
It’s originally a Ukrainian song and sings about a lovesick girl who spills her heart to the moon. But Kawasaki san made it into a kind of a fairy story which features a prince, princess and an old castle.
However, he ran into obstacles. He thought that it was a Russian or Ukrainian folk song, but it was not. A person who wrote that song is living so he had to apply for a license. There was no staff who could speak Russian but he was facing a deadline. Then he took a tricky move.
Kawasaki san asked Ekaterina to talk to a songwriter directly because she was the only person who speaks Russian around him. A singer or performer does not do such a background work usually but he had no choice but taking any port in a storm. Later, “Furui Oshiro No Monogatari” was finished with many bumps and detours.

今週は『エカテリーナ後援会茅場町支部ミーティング』の第２回目をお送りしました。前回はエカテリーナさんのプロデューサーで、日本を代表するボニージャックスのリーダー、西脇久夫さんにお越しいただきましたが、今回はエカテリーナさんの歌声を世に広めたもう一人の人、NHK『みんなのうた』プロデューサーを務める川崎龍彦さんです。
川崎さんは、２００５年２月〜３月にかけて『みんなのうた』で放送されたエカテリーナさんの名曲『古いお城のものがたり』の制作に深く関わりました。元々はウクライナの音楽で、歌詞の内容も「恋する女の子がお月様に相談する」といった淡いラブソングでした。それを川崎さんは、王子様やお姫様、お城が登場するファンタジーにリメイクしました。
ここまでは良かったのですが、問題は楽曲の使用・放送許可。てっきり古いロシアまたはウクライナの民謡だと思っていた川崎さんは、作者が現存すると知って悩みます。周りにロシア語ができる人間がいない、しかし放送の期日は迫っている・・・そこで川崎さんは奇策に出ます。
何と、エカテリーナさんに楽曲使用許可の連絡係をお願いしたのです。通常このような業務に歌手本人が関わることはありません。しかし、限られた時間と人員の中で、追いつめられた状況が生み出した「窮余の一策」でした。大変な紆余曲折を経て『古いお城のものがたり』は完成しました。

Today we talked with a gentleman who opened doors for my career. Of course Mr. Hisao Nishiwaki, my producer, gave me a big, big help but I never forget his effort, too.
Mr. Tatsuhiko Kawasaki from NHK’s music program called “Minna No Uta (Everyone’s Song)”. Nishiwaki san told him about me and he conceived the idea of making me sing a song called “Furui Oshiro No Monogatari (Story of the Old Castle)” for the program. That was a big chance for me because the program is very popular nationwide.
But I was involved in an unexpected thing. That song is originally written by a Ukranian songwriter so I had to apply for a license to her. Usually a record company or TV station does that kind of work but I was the only person who can speak Russian among them. So I had no choice but doing it.
I remember that one day I made a phone call from a pay phone to a Ukrainian songwriter. Then she asked me for very expensive royalty. I got so mad I slammed the phone and cried.
But after that, we could work on a tune smoothly and showcased the song in February 2005.

今日は、ボニージャックスの西脇さんに負けないくらいお世話になった、NHK『みんなのうた』の川崎龍彦さんにゲストにお越しいただきました。西脇さんが川崎さんに私のことを紹介してくれたことで、日本でとっても有名な番組『みんなのうた』で歌うチャンスがめぐってきました。
でも、まさか私自身が曲の使用許可を取る作業までするとは、考えてもみませんでした。徳橋さんのブログに詳しく書いてありますが、普通ならレコード会社とかテレビ局が取るべき使用許可を、ロシア語ができるただ一人の人という理由で、私が代わりとなって取ることになったんです。
ウクライナの時間に合わせて電話するので、例えば川崎さんたちと打ち合わせをした後、夜中近くに渋谷駅ハチ公口の電話ボックスから、曲の原作者に電話したこともありました。するとその方は、高い楽曲使用料を要求してきたのです。私は電話を切ったあと、怒りのあまり泣いてしまいました。
でもその後は、スムーズに作業が進みました。川崎さんのプロデュースで新たに生まれ変わった『古いお城のものがたり』を、２００５年２月に皆さんに無事、お披露目することができました。

This is a story of “Story of the Old castle”. I’ll never have that kind of opportunity. It was really tough for me but it’s something I’ll never forget.
Kawasaki san gave me a wonderful chance to get mass popularity so I would like to say Спасибо to him!
